Yang Weiping, the manager of the store management department, went to the supply hubs in Hanyang several times each day to stand in line and collect goods as soon as news of new shipments arrived. On the fourth day of the first lunar month, at 6:30 a.m., they set off from Xiangyang, driving round-trip for 22 hours to deliver supplies to Xiantao and Wuhan.

　　Wuhan has closed its outbound transportation channels, effectively hitting the city’s “pause button,” yet the Renfu Hubei Logistics Center has been hit with a “fast-forward button.” Frontline supervisors like Xu Heng, who are separated from their wives and children, have moved into dormitories at the logistics center and are working tirelessly around the clock, demonstrating the “nail-driving spirit.” Despite the extremely high level of tension among staff, they’re ensuring the logistics center operates efficiently.

In Jingzhou, Renfu split its forces into two groups: one headed north to Henan, and the other eastward to Wuhan, tirelessly working to ensure hospitals had the supplies they needed. On New Year’s Eve, Cai Shiyang and Liu Guoping from the Marketing Department of Renfu Shiyan traveled thousands of miles overnight to deliver and install testing equipment at the People’s Hospital of Zhuxi County. Upon learning that the People’s Hospital of Macheng was urgently in need of protective suits, Dai Guorong from Renfu Xianning made a late-night delivery.

Liu Bo from Wuhan Optics Valley Hospital caught a cold along the way, yet he still insisted on delivering medical supplies to Xiantao. Zhu Fengwang from Renfu Nosin drove nearly a thousand kilometers to Shiyan; by the time he returned, it was almost 1 a.m. The next day, he immediately set off again without rest, heading to Jingzhou and other places to transport supplies.

The team’s only female colleague, Chen Yadan, set off for Xiangyang at 6 a.m. on January 23 and didn’t return to Wuhan with the delivery driver until shortly after 2 a.m. on January 24 (New Year’s Eve). In the afternoon, he hurried back from Qichun to Wuhan’s No. 9 Hospital to install another three ventilators. By the time he left the hospital, the city was already lit up with thousands of twinkling lights. “It was the first time we had our New Year’s Eve dinner right there in the hospital, eating boxed meals,” Luo Yi said with a smile.

　　Like medical personnel, they go to the hospital every day and have to enter and exit the hospital’s isolation zones during installation. Despite strict and comprehensive protective measures, the sound of an ambulance’s siren—growing louder as it approaches from afar—always adds a touch of tension.

　　“Sometimes, it feels like we’re racing against time—and racing against life itself,” said Tang Lei. “There’s definitely some anxiety about entering and exiting the hospital’s isolation zones. But every time I think about it, I remind myself that getting a ventilator installed even just one minute earlier, putting it into use even one minute sooner, could mean admitting and treating one more patient infected with the virus,” said Hu Weilong.
